It’s always a pleasant surprise to find an accommodation that offers comfort both inside the rooms and on the grounds. In Pacific Grove, the Butterfly Grove Inn does just that.
It’s a quiet haven, off busy streets with spacious, tree-dotted grounds that encourage spending time outdoors and offer a direct route to a 2-acre monarch butterfly sanctuary.
The inn features 28 cottage-style rooms with small front porches, as well as a two-story vintage house with larger suites. On the grounds are a fenced-in heated pool and hydro jet hot tub with a grassy play area nearby. At the other end of the property is a second lawn area equipped with benches, where towering trees provide an ideal habitat for a variety of very vocal bird life.
Butterfly Grove is named for the monarch sanctuary adjacent to its grounds, making possible multiple daily visits for viewing the butterflies in residence from October to February every year.
My cottage room was very spacious with high ceilings and simple, comfortable furnishings. The bed, bureau and good-size table and chairs did not crowd the space in my recently remodeled, freshly painted room.
A large window let in light and a fireplace kept me cozy.
The room was equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. The television accepts both tapes and DVDs and the office has a large video lending library, as well as popcorn, perfect for celebrating a night “at home.”
The inn is conveniently located one-half mile from downtown, where an interesting assortment of shops and eateries are fun to explore. One-half mile in the other direction leads to the coast. Both are walkable distances along attractive neighborhood streets.
One route to the coast takes you down Asilomar Avenue, past the cemetery where deer often graze, the Point Pinos Lighthouse, and the spectacular setting of the public Pacific Grove Golf Links. It also leads down to the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, where wildlife competes for attention with sparkling water and rocky coves.
When my children were young, the family would come for an after-Christmas escape. Even though temperatures were low, the kids would fool around in the heated pool and join us in the hot tub; then we’d all head back to warm up and relax in our cozy room. Although many years have passed, it’s nice to know that my recent stay was as comfortable and pleasant as it was in the past.
