A day-long butterfly fair has been held in Jahangirnagar University.
“Let butterflies fly in the sky and give a boost to the nature” was the slogan of the fair.
The fair held on Friday was arranged to create awareness about butterflies’ role in maintaining ecological balance.
Jahangirnagar University vice chancellor professor Sharrif Enamul Kabir inaugurated the fair at 10.30am.
Kabir urged all to come forward to conserve butterflies. He also declared to arrange similar fair by the university every year.
The vice-chancellor also inaugurated a children’s painting competition and a photography exhibition of butterfly at the university’s Zahir Raihan Auditorium.
Another exhibition of 100 out of 102 species of butterflies was arranged. These species were detected by Md Manwar Hossain, assistant professor of zoology department in his 14-year research.
In a ‘Two mini butterfly huts’ set up in front of the Zahir Raihan auditorium, the butterflies were exhibited for the viewers.
Hossain said that about 300 butterflies of ‘Plain Tiger Butterfly’ variety, after being bred artificially by the entomology section of the zoology department, were released at the university campus.
Hossain said though over 10,000 species of butterflies are found around the globe, only 500 among them are available in Bangladesh. And among these, 102 species are available in Jahangirnagar University.
The university’s zoology department, Grameen Phone and Channel i have jointly arranged the fair.
