Out in the Garden: Butterfly Gardens

Imaging watching a colorful parade of native butterflies flying from flower to flower. Austin Area Garden Council President Donna Freidenreich learned all about butterfly gardens from Austin Parks and Recreation Landscape Technician Jack French. French is responsible for taking care of the Doug Blachly Butterfly Trail and Garden at Zilker Botanical Garden.

In this week’s edition of Out in the Garden learn the history of the garden and how to start your own butterfly sanctuary.

You can find more resources for butterfly gardening at the National Wildlife Federation website. For native plants that attract butterflies take a look at Native and Adapted Landscape Plants which is an earthwise guide for Central Texas published by the City of Austin Watershed Protection and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.
